The aim of this website is to provide material that aids the understanding of music concepts. It is not envisaged that children could use the site alone to gain understanding of the concepts. Teachers, parents, siblings or musicians will be needed to act as guides. Have fun, be kind and enjoy the ride.

Sound is what music is made of - it travels through the air and into our ears like magic! High sounds can squeak like mice, and low ones can rumble like thunder. Every note we play or sing is a little piece of sound, ready to become part of a song.
learn moreRhythm is the heartbeat of music - it tells us when to clap, tap, or dance! Just like footsteps in a parade or waves at the beach, rhythm keeps everything moving in time. Slow and steady or fast and bouncy - it always brings music to life.
learn morePitch tells us how high or low a sound is - like birds singing up high or drums booming down low. When you play notes, each one has its own pitch. Put them in order, and you’ve got a scale, a tune, or even a song!
Coming SoonHarmony is what happens when notes play together - like friends singing at the same time. Some notes sound bright and happy, others dark and spooky, but together they make music rich and full. It’s like mixing colours to paint a beautiful sound!

From the Creator of 'Not Just Noise' - Phyl Lobl
So glad you found this website. I was a Primary Classroom Teacher who wanted to provide pupils with an understanding of Music Concepts, leading to the making of music at a PRIMARY LEVEL because music is BRAINFOOD. Perhaps you are a Primary School Teacher, a parent or carer, or a student, all of whom could want to find resources that ‘help them’ to find and guide a path to Music Making. Listening to music can stimulate brain development, however actually singing and playing, even if achieved in only minor ways, results in joining synapses in the brain and leads to physical and mental benefits. A SOUND START ensures basic terminology has visual and aural ways to ‘fix’ the concepts in the mind.
A note of attribution and appreciation:
Attendance at Courses and Workshops that gave knowledge of Music Teaching methods already widely used influenced the content of these NOT JUST NOISE teaching materials.
Dalcroze - led to using the basic movements which led to Line Patterns.
Kodaly - led to creating the Ear Training Songs.
Orff Schukwerk - led to Creative Music Exercises.
Suzuki - led to including playing instruments using ear skills.
